the project

The team at NFCC thinks North Fairmount is beautiful, and our Streetscape Beautification and Community Gardening Project is our love letter to the neighborhood and a way to rebuild community connections as we emerge from Covid. We are planning to showcase North Fairmount's existing beauty through public garden beds, hand painted, colorful flower pots filled to the brim with vibrant flowers and plants, and bringing public art to the streets in the form of large murals. We hope these projects will bring residents out of their homes to connect with nature and their neighbors.

Our project consists of three main focus areas. First, we have identified eight sites where we plan to build raised garden beds for fresh vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Second, we received a donation of 18 large flower pots, which we plan to let the neighborhood children paint and decorate before we plant flowers and plants and place them throughout the neighborhood. Third, we have identified several locations in which we would like to paint colorful, eye-catching murals.

The North Fairmount Community Center supports the underserved population of the community through affordable housing, food, and other necessities as well as educational workshops and recreational activities. Our vision is for North Fairmount to be a dynamic, flourishing, and self-sustaining community where individuals and families can grow together and find the stabilization they need to achieve their goals. In today’s divisive and fragmented climate, we have a vision for a stronger and united community.

the steps

  • Mid to late spring: time to plant! We'll begin to assemble our garden beds and start to fill our pots.
  • Late spring to early summer: Community children will paint our flower pots, and we will place them throughout the community.
  • Summertime is mural time! We plan to begin the mural projects in June - want to help? Sign up to volunteer!

why we're doing it

At NFCC, we believe that the neighborhood of North Fairmount is a beautiful place. However, the streets and green spaces are sullied by litter, dumping, and disrepair. We would like to change that. Our goal for our Streetscape Beautification and Community Gardening Project is to transform the shared spaces in North Fairmount into beautiful, colorful places by installing raised garden beds, placing hand-painted flower pots throughout the neighborhood, and painting vibrant murals throughout the neighborhood.  We hope that by brightening the streets of North Fairmount, community members will feel a greater sense of pride and ownership in the place in which they live.
