About Us
Service Workers Coalition is a grassroots Mutual Aid Fund, and now incorporated Non-Profit Organization, that has mobilized to respond the the evolving needs of laid off hospitality workers throughout the COVID-19 crisis. The central action of SWC is grocery stipends. The fund offers $50 a week grocery stipends to any out of work service industry workers. We also offer delivery of those supplies if a worker is quarantined for any reason, or does not have access to a bank account, which is needed for wire transfer of the stipend. We are also offering to facilitate harm reduction supply access and coordinate wellness check ins and other mental health services remotely. We raised 80k in a month, most in donations that were between 5-20 dollars, a majority coming from other workers in our community. We supported over 1,200 New York City Service workers for 5 weeks. Many of those workers have made and followed through on weekly contributions. Moving forward we will be prioritizing workers who are undocumented, are refugees, don't have bank accounts, have fallen ill, or have been unable to access unemployment benefits. We are of course going to honor all requests, but are asking the members of our community to take stock and consider the community as a whole as we move forward with the fund. Of course anyone who has worked in a kitchen or on the floor naturally resists that alienation. We only function together. But we’re not immune, and if we struggle alone, we drown. We are building, now, a future which acknowledges that we can not go it alone. You can help someone not just to pay for their groceries, but to know they are supported by a whole network of people. We want to continue to thank all of the small creative and brilliant communities that have come together to support this fund. This is how not only how a raft becomes a boat, it is how the waters become more still. Thank you for your consideration.
We Participate Because
We Believe that mutual aid is much more than just giving people things or even money. It is when we join together to meet all our material needs so that we can fight, or in this particularly difficult moment in time, can live another day. It’s an act of care that helps create new social relations in order to survive. When you give to SWC, you are supporting each other, if you are a service worker yourself, for no reason other than to overcome the alienation that has become common in our society, in our labor and in our other communities.
