Biography
Love Earth Herbal, established by Roxanne Jones in 2010, produces herbs, vegetables, and flowers using organic practices in Detroit, MI. Herbs from LEH, grown on a half acre, include: tarragon, lavender, hibiscus, mint, marjoram, rosehips, rosemary, ginger, and lemon balm. Love Earth Herbal produces hand bagged tisanes as a value added product of herbs she grows in Detroit. Sales avenues are mainly retail customers at farm stands, markets, and community events. Roxanne also works at Earthworks Urban Farm, program of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen; a certified organic producer of vegetables, perennial fruits, and transplants. She’s been employed 5 years as assistant farm manager after 2 years of education with Earthworks Agriculture Training Program. She is a former member of the Detroit Food Policy Council which she served for 2 years as Community Representative. Roxanne works alongside her husband, Donald Jones, who also has over 5 years farming experience in the city as Occupy Yourselves Agricultural Academy (OY). OY grows on a half acre and sells a variety of vegetables, tailored to CSA customers and restaurants including hardy cooking greens, kale, collard, chard as well as fennel, celery, garlic, thyme and lemongrass. We produce for retail and wholesale markets with Keep Growing Detroit’s cooperative program Grown In Detroit and contribute to growing local CSAs. Each of us started in community, reclaiming abandoned parks and growing food on different sides of town with the same goal of growing healthy food for community while engaging neighbors. We are growing the family farm operation with our two small children Dollia and Rasaan.
