why we're doing it

Brief back story: Black and Brown middle school students at my school who have Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) are reading at a 3rd grade level per their STAR and F&P Reading score assessments. Historically students like mine will not graduate from high school, or go to college, or find a worthy career. In the exPLAYatory Lab however, my students are exploring possible career passions through Fort Building, Rock Climbing and Glass Fusing at an Industrial Arts School and Rock Climbing School.

This exPLAYatory Lab curriculum also aligns with California 7th grade content and standards for Science, PE, Geometry and Writing. Where Rock climbing becomes Physics and PE, Fort building becomes Geometry and Welding and Glass fusing becomes Chemistry and Writing. Where translating Industrial Arts and Rock climbing to career can look like Rock climber = Geologist, Fort builder = General Contractor, Glass Fuser = Art Conservator.

KIPP Academy Students Explore Learning Through Art

Last week, 10 KIPP Bridge Academy students arrived at The Crucible for the first session in an eight-week series of classes. The YES, I Have And IEP! program was designed by their teacher Mischelle Brown and offers students with different learning needs an alternative education through art-making and outdoor activity.

Each week, participating 7th and 8th graders will explore departments like Glass Blowing, Jewelry, Welding, and more. After their workshops, students will return to KIPP Bridge Academy to apply what they learned to science, math, and other subjects. It's the first in what Mischelle hopes will become a regular curriculum for individual education plan or IEP students.

“I like to see life through risky play. If [students] want to climb a tree, they figure it out. If they want to build a fort, they figure it out. We’re taking those elements of play to make a class that impacts students who learn differently, and help them reach goals and satisfaction academically.”

- Mischelle Brown
Educator at KIPP Bridge Academy

Later this spring, Mischelle will present her initial findings at the US Play Coalition’s annual conference. You can learn more about how Mischelle and her students are piloting new educational pathways and learn how you can support their new program on the Crucible blog.
