the project

Current research provided by the Kansas City Health Department has shown alarming statistics that up to a thirteen-year life expectancy differentiation exists, simply based upon an individual’s zip code within Kansas City, MO.  The Youth Excelling in Life and Leadership program will work to diminish these discrepancies by targeting areas most negatively affected by developing the youth and equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to create positive impact in their schools and communities.  We believe that civic engagement is a source of individual influence possessed by members of society and a powerful source where the voice of each child can be heard.  There are over 34,000 students in the public school districts within Jackson County, of which the Youth Leadership Cohort will recruit from and create strong, confident, and strategic young thinkers.  The desired affect of such is a present and future conglomerate of empowered students that will be prepared to take action and address everyday school and community barriers and burdens.

the steps

-Continue dialogue with schools, communities, and partner organization

-Finalize details of meeting sites

-Complete design of promotional materials for distribution

-Recruit future student leaders

why we're doing it

Each and every child has a voice and a unique contribution to make to their community and society as a whole, but often due to environmental and social detriments, they are not given the opportunity.  Communities Creating Opportunity, through Youth Excelling in Life and Leadership, seeks to identify those talented and unique individuals within the urban core of KCMO and equip them to fully and effectively participate in their schools and communities.  Students will be prepared to tackle personal, school, and community challenges as they develop a strong sense of personal and collective leadership.  YELL will build the intrinsic power of students to find those voices and inspire change throughout their discerned areas of interest and importance.  The leadership skills developed in YELL will also equip our youth with the necessary skills to become mentors to their younger peers as the program progresses.  Participating students will be personally and collectively enriched.  Each will be better prepared to tackle the challenges they will surely face in school and most importantly in life.
