About the project
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many students and families are faced with the challenges of navigating schooling for their children during 2020-2021 school year. Children are in need of safe place for educational refuge to protect and preserve their mental and socio-emotional health.
The YDH I.D.E.A. Learning Pod Co-operative would serve as a resource for parents and families to provide access to safe and equitable learning outdoor environment during the pandemic. The learning pod cooperative will include a team of passionate advocates for student learning and development comprised of parents, students, and educators who guide students with Montessori- like instruction to engage in outdoor learning focused on agricultural and environmental science, art, and recreation.
A number of studies have documented the positive impact of the use of greenspace on not only the mental and physical health of students but also improvements in socio-emotional learning and wellbeing. Hosting the learning pod in an outdoor learning environment will positively impact the mental health and the socio-emotional wellbeing of students and give the the opportunity to learn about nature and enhance social skills.
The funds raised from the campaign will give us the opportuntiy to contract with qualified outdoor instructors and to operate the program at a reduced rate and offer scholarships to families as needed.
The Steps
Once the funds are secured, we purchase the materials needed for outdoor learning and secure qualified instructors who can begin instruction on September 8th, 2020.
Why we‘re doing it
The YDH Learning Pod Co-Op is creating holistic opportunities to meet the childcare needs for families duing the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition the outdoor learning environment instruction will teach kids how to practice environmental stewardship and challenge them to think critically about solutions to problems that impact the community at large.
