the project

The Steel City Indie Youth Film Workshops are designed to give Pittsburgh citywide youth creative opportunities to express themselves through wiring and film. A lot of kids only have access to athletic activities. Some aren't athletic and some are athletic and want to do more creative things.

I initially designed by acting workshops for adults looking for acting opportunities, coaching, and to cast for my projects. I was asked to offer an after school program for the youth in our neighborhood. I quickly learned that regardless of their home life our youth possess a lot of hidden talents and really need to express themselves. COVID shut us down which opened the door to creating virtual opportunities.

Over the summer I was able to shoot with my 17-year-old intern. I'm currently working with a 10 yr old that comes in on Saturdays. He's written his script and now in the casting and filming stages.

The reward in seeing the excitement in our youth when they create and complete a project is second to none.

the steps

1. Purchase what's most important to begin.
2. Begin the marketing and promotion process letting everyone know we're open for new enrollments.
3. Going over all safety and social distancing protocols for our small group in-person sessions.

why we're doing it

My mom and I have always given back to the communities year-round. Back to school bashes, turkey dinner baskets, toy drives, clothing, hygiene, free prescription eyeglass giveaways, and more; and we will continue to do so. I strongly believe our kids need as many positive outlets as possible. I work with and come in contact with the kids from all walks of life (bullies, kids that get bullied, suicidal, homeless, drug addiction, and a lot more). After losing a stepson to suicide I started paying more attention to not just my family but kids that I come in contact with. They need to express themselves.

I believe my program can help Pittsburgh teens express themselves, learn team building, learn how to give back, and feel a sense of accomplishment.
