Leader
herbert virgo
Location
400 Tower Ave. Hartford, CT 06112
About the project
This project achieves several goals at once. First, it will produce saleable timber, character wood and other woody residues. Second, it will provide many youth workers with skills and training. Third, it will provide a modest opportunity for community engagement, and public speaking skills for the youth chosen to present the project to the community.
Overall, increased management action and coordination of projects to help restore the historical significance, ecological value, and recreational use of the Keney Park. As just one example, clearing the trails of old trees will help restore passageways currently overgrown and potentially hazardous, while at the same time improving wildlife habitat and tree regeneration.
The Steps
- In cooperation with the City of Hartford, make arrangements for a location where a portable sawmill may be set up and logs processed. This site must also have the capacity for storing the milled lumber and for supplies and equipment to be kept safely.
- Make arrangements with a competent sawyer so that that individual may train an employee of KPSP in the proper way to mill wood. This training shall also include training in sawmill and lumberyard management, to include such facets as proper wood storage, lumberyard safety and equipment maintenance.
- After the KPSP employee has been sufficiently trained in running the sawmill, that employee shall continue running the rented sawmill until a sufficient volume of sawn lumber and other wood products has been produced, such that it can be reasonably judged as to whether this approach to the utilizing of wood from Keney Park and other local sources:
- A proportion of the wood sawn through this project will be dried in a kiln that is to be set-up as a part of this project. In addition to the sawn lumber produced, wood scraps, chips and firewood will also be produced as part of this project.
