About the project
Girls Rock Detroit has provided a week-long summer rock camp for youth for five summers. This fall we want to expand our programming to adults and offer a long-weekend camp where female, trans, and gender expansive adults can learn to play an instrument and join a temporary band.
We will offer a 4 day program this fall culminating with a performance on a Sunday evening. During that time, participants will receive lessons on guitar, bass, drums, or keys from an experienced local musician, participate in workshops lead by local activists, organizers, and entrepreneurs, and compose an original song with band members they just met.
Our camp will be offered on a sliding scale to women and gender diverse adults in and around Detroit.
The Steps
GRD has provided summer camps for female, trans, and gender expansive youth for the past five summers. We will take what we've learned from these camps and apply them to a weekend-long experience for adults with little to no music experience.
Why we‘re doing it
Girls Rock Detroit is a community organization dedicated to fostering creative expression, positive self-esteem and community awareness for girls, women, gender expansive, and transgender people through music education and performance. We believe it is crucial that all people have access to equipment and instruction regardless of their socio-economic background, religion, race, gender identity, sexuality or ethnicity.
Not a single youth camp has gone by without a volunteer or camper guardian utter the oft-heard phrase of: "I wish this was around when I was younger." While we may no longer be kids, there is no reason why we can't offer a condensed version of our youth program to adults wanting to explore their creative side.
