Utility Help at Humanity House

Help Iolan's pay their utility bills when the shut-off ban is lifted!!!

Leader

Georgia Masterson

Location

110 East Street Iola, KS 66749

About the project

When you don't have enough money to pay all your bills, you pay what is essential.  During the moratorium on evictions and utility disconnects, our neediest citizens may have chosen to buy medication, and meet other needs.  Those with sufficient income likely find this decision unwise and may feel those who made these choices deserve to pay the price of homelessness.  That will be the result of either choice as failure to maintain utilities is grounds for eviction and cause for foster care placement for children.

Please help us protect our neediest families!!!

The Steps

Those needing help will make an application through our office.

Agreements to repay either financially or through volunteer time will be completed.

Payment will be made directly to the vendor.

Why we‘re doing it

Even before the Covid-19 epidemic, the economic inequality gap was tremendous. Here at Humanity House, we often hear that the poor should be taught to budget and just pull themselves up by their bootstraps.  The current Social Security Supplemental benefit for a single person is $783 per month.  The minimum wage take-home is $1140 per month.  We challenge you to construct a workable budget based on those incomes either for a single person, or heaven forbid, a family!!  IF you were able to accomplish that, imagine that your car breaks down, or a child is sick so you miss a week or work, or any other common household emergency strikes.  See what that does to your budget!  People don't choose to make unwise decisions so they can stay poor!  Poverty is not a lifestyle chosen for anyone other than religious recluses!
