About the project

Crown Heights/Brownsville section of Brooklyn needs greater access to green space in under-served neighborhood. The residents need more access to healthy produce. An obstacle to creating/sustaining the gardens is restricted access to water and comfortable seating for residents.

The Steps

1) Deconstruction/demolition/removal of the old, dangerously decrepit shade structure (1 week). 2) Digging 4-foot foundation holes to insure that the new structure is permanent and resilient (1 week). 3) Purchasing lumber and materials at Home Depot and hauling them to the garden (1 week). 4) Making scale models of the structure (2 weeks). 5) Building the structure (4 weeks).

Why we‘re doing it

By building a gazebo, the students of Urban Workshop/Lyons Community School will make the garden a more welcoming environment for community members and gardeners. The gazebo will be designed with a built-in seating area, which will make the space more comfortable and increase the garden's membership, and designed for rainwater-harvesting, which will allow for the garden's flowers and vegetables to flourish.
