the project

Imagine if you could turn something so blah into something so amazing. Gardening in the District is returning with ideas to revitalize vacant lots. Over the years we have successfully reconstructed numerous vacant lots throughout the Greater Cleveland communities. We intend to install sitting areas, games, a Free Library, fruit trees, as well as a farmers market which will be the biggest difference in the lots we have revitalized thus far . Additionally, we will install a fence surrounding the lot all the while bringing beauty, arts, and fresh foods to a neighborhood near you.
Our youths are very driven on learning and being apart of making a difference. This project will give them the opportunity to express thier culture and also bring arts to the vacant lots. We have them take part of the arts and culture  brining it to life  through imagery and words. Also, by picking the fruits and vegetables grown and distributed throughout the farmers market.
We believe that you don't have to move to a better neighborhood to have a better neighborhood. With your help we can bring this project to life and become one step closer to changing the place you call home.

the steps

why we're doing it

The people is what motivates Gardening in the District and why we strive and fight to meet their needs. Living in the Greater Cleveland neighborhood we have seen a rise in empty lots and houses, causing the residents to relocate and an increase in the poverty rate.Beautfying the vacant lots  gives hope to attract people too the community, which will allow more resources; Having the resources to access affordable, healthy food is an economic problem residents face and its especially on the rise due to the Covid19 pandemic. With the farmers market, we aim to become an organization were the people can look to to bring arts, education, and healthy eating all the while bringing change and resources to the community and help combat the food desert.

We intentionally create urban community pocket parks where all residents are welcome and encouraged to foster meaningful relationships. Community is not a noun; it is a verb. We believe those who know better do better. We create unique art-infused experiential learning opportunities for residents to grow in knowledge of healthy lifestyle habits and we share a duty to steward and protect our community’s natural resources and native plants.
