About the project
We are aiming to support events at the Good Life Garden in Bushwick throughout the summer of 2023 starting with the BK Cumbia Festival. The Good Life Garden is invested in working and listening to their community and creating a space that serves the interest of its neighbors. By creating a welcoming space, the Good Life Garden is able to teach about food justice, urban farming, and serve as a meeting ground for cultural events. Funds raised will go to the maintenance of the garden, gardening supplies, as well as workshops and events that showcase the urban farming that goes on in the garden, and features food from local vendors and community members while inspiring others to get involved. The garden produces food which is handed out to the community including a shelter which is located around the corner from the garden.
The Steps
-Meet with garden leaders to discuss what new initiatives they would like to implement
-Allow community members to dictate the types of events they would like to host
-Events will occur July - August 2023
Why we‘re doing it
For many years the Good Life Garden was an abandoned park that became an unofficial dumping ground full of sinkholes, debris, and was overgrown with invasive plants. Because of the dedication of the community, the garden has become a place a lush and serene public space. The rehabilitation of the Good Life Garden is an inspiration for what we can all do to our neighborhoods if we work compassion towards a common goal.
Our organization has always been treated so openly and generously by the leadership of the garden that we want to ensure they have the support and funding they need to continue their programing and mission.
