Uplyff Kiswahili Language and Culture for kids

With this project we plan to teach five classes in three locations through the year.  The budget includes materials for the students, a small stipend for the teachers and an authentic meal for everyone.

About the project

We go to classrooms and show students the vibrancy beauty and love for Africa through lessons infused with music, geography, politics, language, and culture of eastern Africa.  We then end our lessons with a celebration teaching Kwanzaa principals and enjoying delicious African cuisine.  The classes are eight weeks in length and the curriculum has been approved by school administers and teachers. When we see our former students in passing they always greet us 'Jambo!' with a smile!

The Steps

We have already identified schools which would like to have the program this year

Hire teachers to teach Swahili class

Create a class schedule with Harvey Rice 4th grade class

Teach 7 weeks of Swahili language lessons

Host an end of class celebration/meal with African cuisine

Why we‘re doing it

We want to address the educational needs of children to have increased global awareness.   Our children aren't getting classes that reflect their own cultural heritage and they need it to feel confident in themselves and awareness of where they come from. Imagine if all of our children went into high school with a strong sense of self and belonging??? Can you imaging the different educational and personal outcomes we'd see in our community???
