About the project
The Tuxedo Project plans to expand the organization’s primary programming space, The Tuxedo Project Literary & Community Center, located at 7122 Tuxedo Street. We’ll activate two vacant lots that will provide the neighborhood:
- Wheelchair-accessible space for classes, workshops, book discussions, and neighborhood gatherings
- A neighborhood food pantry to address food insecurity
- A neighborhood garden to increase access to fresh produce
- Unique and empowering programming that marries the creative power of gardening, writing, and personal growth
The Steps
- Identify an architect to design the property and adjacent lot.
- Identify and collaborate with food justice educators to determine programming and garden design.
- Determine summer literary programming.
- Erect initial test structures.
- Collaborate with the Tuxedo Neighborhood Association to determine initial programming in the space and plan the neighborhood grand opening.
Why we‘re doing it
This space-related initiative is important to The Tuxedo Project’s programming because a more robust community space, complete with larger, wheelchair-accessible event and classroom space, will enable us to better serve the neighborhood and rethink the ways we engage with and consume the written word. This space will also provide access to information and address food insecurity in one of the city’s most isolated zip codes: 48204.
