the project

We Fairies have been super sucessful in our efforts to divert compostables from the Shelby County Landfills. So successful in fact, that our stockpile is fast approaching the "unmanagable" threshold if people-power is our only given recourse. We are asking you, the sustainability-minded public, to help us mechanize by purchasing a small tractor with a bucket to make the handling of larger volumes of those fantastic kitchen scraps a reality. A machine will not only reduce our hands-on time in terms of materials management and free us up to focus our energy on growth and development, it will also improve the overall quality of the finished product. Let's give those friendly aerobic critters a helping hand!

The Compost Fairy is a tax-exempt not-for-profit composting service that serves Memphis, Tennessee. The mission of the Compost Fairy is to provide Memphis residents a collection and drop off service for kitchen scraps, yard waste and other compostable materials in an effort to reduce landfill waste, increase resources for sustainable gardening, and connect people in the community. Currently, Memphis has extremely limited composting resources and opportunities for residents and businesses. The Compost Fairy strives to fill this gap by providing compostable material collection services, while educating the public on the process and benefits of composting, and returning soil-building finished compost to the community.

the steps

May 2018: Buy a tractor

May-June 2018: Use the tractor to turn mass quantities of compostables. Lather, rinse, repeat.

June-Forever: Deploy nutrient-rich, soil-building finsihed compost to gardens, landscapes, veggie patches and flowerbeds across the Memphis metro-area. Singlehandedly reverse the effects of soil erosion and climate change. Receive the gratitude of an adoring public.Lather, rinse, repeat.

why we're doing it

Y'all, we have to make some changes. 80% of our historic soil carbon has been lost due to inefficent solid waste management and chemical-dependent, unsustainable agricultural practice. 35% of what we send to the landfill right now could be diverted and turned into valuable compost and returned to our ailing soils. This is our ship, and we're all on it together. It is the soil that sustains us, and without it, we will simply cease to be. Help us break the conveyor belt, status quo waste management system, and put the remains of the good stuff we grow in our gardens and whip up in our kitchens back into the earth the right way. We are growing, and we need your help to make it to the next level. The Compost Fairy is staffed and managed completely by volunteers, and 100% of your (and everyone else's) contributions will go right into the purchase of this capacity growing machine. Let's turn and burn!
