We started Trunk-or-Treat to bring our neighborhood and neighbors together on Halloween. Year after year, we noticed a decrease in Halloween trick-or-treating participation, both in the number of trick-or-treaters and houses handing out treats. So as a response we decided to decorate the trunks of our cars and meet in an ample-sized public space (the parking lot of Morning Star Baptist Church) and provide families with a high-quality experience right where they live.
Trunk-or-Treat began in 2019 and had about 150 visitors. In 2020, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were able to distribute gift bags to caregivers and adult trick-or-treaters. The bags included personal care, household cleaning, and PPE items, along with candy, snacks, and comic books to promote literacy and knowledge of black comic characters. We were able to repeat our efforts in 2021 and 2022. This has quickly grown into an annual event that the community is looking forward to! In just a few years T-o-T has had several hundreds of people come through and have a fun neighbor-filled night!
We need your help to make Trunk-or-Treat 2023 a success!
We have seen so many neighbors come out and have a really good time. We simply want to make sure that people feel welcome and like they have worth and dignity. Halloween is a time for us to have a good time and put smiles on each other's faces.
Last year we had a DJ and photographer and an abundance of treats for our event. Comics have been donated this year by Carol and John's Comic Shop and Comics at the Corner is supplying personal care and household cleaning products.
