About the project
Bowen Memorial Baptist Church spent the past 15 years harvesting and distributing produce throughout N.Y.C. One of the recent challenges is to get people to love the process of harvesting and not just the finished products. Our goal is to teach harvesting to the local communities who we now provide produce to so they can help us harvest.
The funds will alllow us to provide training to harvest volunteers at the Claremont Neighborhood Center. The trained volunteers will then use those skills to plant and harvest at local gardens in the Bronx. We will spend the balance of the year teaching more youth and adults about harvesting.
The Steps
We will send out to our contacts the opportunity to learn about the process of harvesting. We have already established participants but will increase them. We will then have a training session on harvesting and seeds and tools will be purchased for local gardens. After the training, bi-monthly trips to the farm will include showing the paricipants how to monitor and pick the harvest. We will schedule distribution days that will include the new harvesters to help distribute produce.
Why we‘re doing it
It has always been our ministry to feed the masses. Training additional people to harvest the food we produce will lead to less food waste and more food reaching those in need.
