the project

Prophecy community garden is one of the gardens under the NYC Parks jurisdiction.
The garden is located at 67 – 69 Malta Street in the ENY neighborhood.
The mission of the garden group is to inspire growth and contribute to the well-being of our community; improve our neighborhood by growing food and flora.

The Prophecy garden group would like to further lift the morale of those gathering in the garden as well as the rest of the community by enhancing the garden landscape. We want to beautify the
garden with more flowers (perennials and shrubs) and to add pathways as well as benches that can be appreciated by everyone that gathers there.

Additionally, we would like to cheer up the food program recipients that form their line in the garden weekly by providing entertainment while they are standing on the pantry/soup kitchen line. This would include live music in the garden. Holding a Health fair and events that provide information that will contribute to the welfare of individuals in the neighborhood is also an aspiration for the garden group.

Prophecy Garden could be constructed to be a relaxing and recreational space. Families can benefit from events and programs that will provide a variety of services, such as cooking classes, arts and crafts, and information on healthy lifestyle changes.

One of the challenges we face is the finance to complete the restructuring of the garden into a space that the community can properly utilize.

We would like to start a ioby project to help us with the financing to enhance and improve the garden space.

why we're doing it

This garden is strategically situated adjacent to a local church that not only administrates over the garden but also provides a soup kitchen and pantry for the community. They provide meals for over 400 low-income families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities each week. The line for food usually extends down the block. While this is a good thing, home owners would sometimes complain about the long lines on the sidewalk in front of their homes and even about individuals sitting on their steps/stoops.

In keeping with our goals to contribute to the well-being of our community, the garden area has been playing a key role in the coordination of the food line and alleviating the crowd on the sidewalk. The line is now formed in the garden.

We believe we can make a difference and create an enchanting garden that will uplift the spirits of those that are confronting numerous challenges in their daily
