About the project
It takes a village to raise a child. Team:Work is an attempt to build working skills for young people in the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood and connect them with adult who need work done.
In general, the young people are doing lawn care like weeding, raking, seeding, etc. But in the winter we have found it difficult to find this type of work. So we have started making wood crafts at Zone Recreation Center for use to benefit supporters.
The Steps
We are meeting just about every weekend for a few hours. We have been making our projects out of scrap wood and other trash in the neighborhood.
We will continue to meet at Zone Recreation Center at 10:00 on Saturdays over the winter, unless shoveling jobs present themselves and appropriate weather for young people is at hand.
We have been using borrowed tools to create faces in scrap wood. We call the pieces 'Little Neighbors'. Some of them are larger and we are calling those Big Neighbors!
Why we‘re doing it
I found that in our neighborhood, when a young person atttempted to find work by knocking on doors, the young people were accused of casing homes for burglaries!
To solve this particular issue, we created a Facebook page to introduce folks to the young people, and to give the neighbors some comfort that these particular kids are only trying to find work. So far we have had some considerable success. About 6 young people have made a total combined income of approximately $2000, usually $20 at a time.
The money we are looking for is to keep them with a continuous income stream (about $20 per person per weekend) to get through the winter. And to support more projects and perhaps purchase tools.
