About the project
Friends of Transmitter Park (est. 2012) is a volunteer group dedicated to making WNYC Transmitter Park a cleaner, greener and safer center of Greenpoint community life and for all that visit this NYC Park. The Group's mission is to steward the park in partnership with the local community and NYC Parks. Located at the terminus of Greenpoint Avenue and along the East River in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, this Park is considered a sacred 1.6-acre refuge for insects, birds, plants and wildlife.
With the help of this funding we hope to grow and sustain our amazing volunteer corp, who care for our growing pollinator gardens that are welcoming many species of birds, insects and butterflies to the Park for all to enjoy while providing healthy habitats for nature to thrive in. We also hope to expand our programming to include more citizen science projects as well as fun botanical solar art making.
The Steps
- Secure necessary funding
- Engage volunteers for summer and fall gardening season, May - October
- Design and order t-shirts and hats for volunteers
- Order gloves and other protective gear for volunteers
- Create educational programming and gardening materials to encourage public interest and participation
- Order seeds and plants for fall 2023 and spring 2024 planting
Why we‘re doing it
In keeping with the Friends of WNYC Transmitter Park philosophy, our goals are formed by our mission statement of Open Public Space for all, Park Stewardship, Programming and Advocacy.
