Thanks to the ongoing support of the PTA, PS 20 families and local partners, the 400+ kids of PS 20 can now dig in the dirt, plant seeds they helped save in the fall, and then sample the fruits of their labors in the form of herbs, mixed greens, pea shoots, tomatoes, and much more.
50% of our students are from low income households: we really need your support to continue the Green Arts program and pay our fantastic instructors. We also want to expand the program to get our students to learn more about composting and bees.
Composting: the school is committed to zero waste and we would like our students to help recycle food scraps and make compost. This is a challenging task: you need to have the proper equipment as well as spend time educating students and staff on how to recycle. We will have a composting committee composed of children, educating people and making sure they are doing it right.
Bees: we believe its so important to teach our little ones the importance of bees and how cool would it be to have some PS 20 honey! With our partner, City Growers, we will be setting up a beehive on the rooftop and setting up workshops to teach our children about bees and how honey is made. The school is surrounded with parks and gardens that will also benefit from our beehive

PS 20 Green Arts is also a great way to build student’s awareness about sustainability, what they can do to protect the Earth and how art and science mingle:
