About the project

Street Beats is a project of Community Health Councils, Trust South LA, Ride On! Bike Co-Op, and Studio MMD to bring a showcase of music and community to the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Street Beats will be a one-day free and public event to re-envision our streets by activating the intersection of Crenshaw Blvd. & Florence Ave. with an interactive music experiment, food, art, and temporary pedestrian amenities. Through a community festival, Street Beats seeks to highlight the importance of street safety and the power of public space.

The Steps

Our project will bring together neighbors, youth, seniors, businesses, community organizations, and civic leaders to envision a fun event that can showcase a safe, vibrant Crenshaw Blvd. One of our goals of the project is to educate the community around Complete Streets designs, which can improve the quality of life for all road users — especially for those walking, biking and taking transit. The Crenshaw Blvd. Streetscape Plan's aspirational vision will serve as a toolkit for potential improvements that can be implemented along the corridor. Once a community vision has been established, Street Beats and the local community will co-host a one-day Demonstration Day event to showcase a vibrant intersection with music, food and fun, along with temporary Complete Streets improvements. The Demonstration Day will serve as a platform for participants to weigh in on how we can activate our streets, as well as what permanent and long-term changes could — and should — happen on Crenshaw Blvd.

Why we‘re doing it

The intersection of Crenshaw Blvd. and Florence Ave. has been ranked one of the top 20 most dangerous intersections in LA County, due to its high number of traffic crashes and pedestrian injuries. The intersection is thriving with pedestrian and  transit activity at all times of the day. Street Beats wants to test out innovative street designs and bring long-term city investments to the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles to make Crenshaw Blvd. safer and more enjoyable for everyone. The Street Beats team has extensive experience in community-driven campaigns in South Los Angeles and our project is a ground-up, community-led process. We hope to create a long-term community vision for Crenshaw Blvd. as a "Great Street;" and a model of how music, art, and culture can bring people together to re-envision Los Angeles streets to better meet their needs.
