About the project

June 27, 2018- July 1, 2018

Five days of fast paced amazing painting! From the City Park to onsite building locations, artists and volunteers will be hard at work welcoming visitors, setting up equipment, and PAINTING!

The Walldogs" is an internationally renowned organization of sign and mural artists. Every year the Walldogs organize a festival where hundreds of artists descend upon a village or small town to paint several dozen murals in one 3-5 day festival. The tradition of painting wall advertisements dates back long before today. Evidence of this can be seen as "Ghost Signs" throughout cities of all sizes. These mural painters of old were often called Walldogs.

In conjunction with the celebration of Streator's Sesquicentennial, the Walldogs will take over the entire town for 5 days adding 10-15 murals to our downtown depicting our community's rich historical heritage.

Streator is well known for outstanding volunteership and this may be our biggest volunteer undertaking to date. Help is needed in every shape and size, from making a meal for a day weary group of artists to donating a package of Sharpies -- everyone has an opportunity to be a part of creating this unforgettable occasion for our town.

We are actively fundraising toward an overall goal of $120,000 to bring this awe-inspiring event to Streator's downtown.

Why we‘re doing it

Streator Illinois is a rural community located in the north central part of the state.  As is the case of many rural communities, much of Streator's historic past and vibrant business districts have faded due to economic decline.  Our Streator Walldogs mural project will serve as a springboard for regrowth in community pride, identity and spirit.  This will be accomplished by highlighting significant events and figures of our town's past through installation of vibrant public murals throughout our downtown.

Once complete, these murals will serve as a lasting point of interest for visitors and locals alike.  Future plans include a walking mural tour, historic learning opportunities, and continued celebration of Streator's past.
