About the project
The community center will be a place for residents to come together to share ideas, skills, build relationships and create a stronger sense of community.
Our future plans include healthy eating workshops and cooking classes, canning and food preservation workshops. Music - someone is donating a piano, and there a lots of people to teach guitar, drum circles and more. Weaving, quilting, knitting - all people looking to share time together with those of similar interest. Art for young and old. Picture book clubs, discussion groups and a gathering place for all types of community interests. Community game nights, or just come and play some board games, dominos or card games with friends.
A swap shop and a mini indoor market featuring local artists.
Our long term goals are: to add a coffee shop featuring locally baked goods from the community and to create a laser tag arena for young and old on the second floor.
To launch the community center we are hosting the Storer Avenue Halloween Fest on October 31 at dusk. It will include a Trunk or Treat for neighbors to come together to give out candy, a Haunted Balloon Paint Ball Arena for the older kids and a couple of Halloween movies. We will have stringed lights, a disco ball and more.
The Steps
The first step is to prepare the roof. Next we need to fix the electrical. Then heat, and plumbing.
The interior needs drywall repair in areas and there are some boards that need to be replaced on the porch.
We envision colorful exterior painting, reflecting the diversity of our community, and liveliness of the people. Using local spray can artists for murals on the exterior.
The interior will need to be painted as well.
We are looking for volunteers to help with the work and donations of materials as well.
Why we‘re doing it
To build a stronger sense of community, learn from each other and have a place for us to gather. This space is designed to provide a safe, affordable place for families and individuals to participate in fun activities.
