Through the design and launch of a website, this campaign will garner support, provide information, and facilitate discussion about reducing our dependence on disposables in the food service industry.
The fast-paced nature of urban life—especially in New York City—means that we all eat food and beverages away-from-home. In an effort to reduce the amount of disposable cups, plates, and utensils that we throw out each day, this project will get the word out—through the design and launch of a pilot website—about the options for eating zero-waste meals in New York City.
By documenting which businesses offer convenient and affordable options with reusable tableware, as well as the methods for ordering a zero-waste meal (usually it’s as easy as asking for it “to stay”), videos and resources will help garner support for this movement, and help us reduce our individual footprints. The site will act as an interactive channel through which individuals, groups, and businesses exchange ideas and discuss the emerging movement to end our dependence on disposables in the food service industry.
Aren't you sick of disposables? Let's do something about it!
1. Design an interactive, user-friendly, dynamic website where project leaders (and supporters) can post related information, videos and projects.
2. Partner with businesses individuals, and organizations that will link to our site or promote the cause in some way.
3. Continued upkeep and monitoring of website for the pilot first year.
4. Explore the options for continuing the project and website after the pilot year.
We are doing this to reduce the environmental impacts of disposable food packaging, namely, those related to landfilling and incineration. Additionally, we are trying to obtain critical mass support of this issue to convince food-service operators to offer more disposable-free options and business models.
