We are building a blueprint to launch similar entrepreneurial ecosystems in other low-income communities nationwide -- but first, we are showing how it’s done in the Boogie Down!

About the project

StartUp Box is a social enterprise designed to increase opportunities for South Bronx community members to be a part of the tech economy by creating a technology and entrepreneurial ecosystem in the South Bronx.

Over the past year, StartUp Box South Bronx has renovated a corner storefront location and built a growing presence in the immediate neighborhood as well as the tech and competitive gaming communities.

Now that people are attending our events, we need your help to purchase a high-quality,
ceiling-mounted projector so that we can more effectively teach new skills to larger numbers of people, make presentations to our clients, and hold film screenings for pieces that would not usually make it to the South Bronx.

The Steps

During our renovation, we put electrical outlets on the ceiling in anticipation of mounting a projector. Now, we just need to purchase and install the projector.

Why we‘re doing it

Rebuilding the entry level jobs that form the basis of a diverse talent pipeline is not an exact science. Furthermore, the South Bronx can't currently support co-working spaces and a la carte educational opportunities like General Assembly. There are many reasons for this, but one of them is exposure to a startup culture.

We play a role in showing communities what the 'box' looks like, so that inspired people can think outside of it. Our Speaker Series brings in professionals of color at various levels throughout the knowledge economy, to share their pathways through obstacles our audiences can relate to. This and other tech-community building activities are meant to inculcate a spirit of competition, success, and constructive failures so that low-income communities can improve their economy from the inside.
