Photos of Plans from Southside Community Garden

the project

A small donation will help keep The Southside Community Garden growing and flourishing by helping us build a patio!

Once an abandoned lot, SCG is now a beautiful green space! This is the first year that SCG has been an organized community effort with a board, members, fruitful garden beds and gorgeous landscaping. We have had great success so far. Our individual and communal beds are full of zucchini, tomatoes, basil, broccoli, cucumbers, and much more! Our flowers are beautiful! We even planted two trees! Now we hope to use this momentum to revitalize the entrance area of the garden, which until now has not received much attention due to a lack of funds. By turning the front of the garden into a communal patio space complete with a park grill, shaded seating, and of course, more flowers and plants, we believe this garden can become a place for neighbors to come mingle and meet each other.

Members of the garden have designed the area and made a plan for its implementation. Once funds are raised for the supplies, members of the garden and other volunteers from the surrounding community will work together to lay the bricks, install the grill, and construct the shade structure. We hope that this will make the Southside Community Garden not just a place to work--weeding and watering--but also a place to hang out, get to know one another, make new friends, and enjoy the beauty that the garden has brought to this corner of Williamsburg.

the steps

Our project involves a few big steps.  Before we can lay the brick patio, we need to level the ground with fill dirt.  Once level, we then will use previously donated bricks to lay the patio and then fill and set with sand.  After the structure is in place, we need to order and install a permanent park-style grill.  The outer borders of the patio will be wells for plantings, which we need topsoil and plants for.  After all this is complete, we will then construct a wooden shade structure.

1.  Level the ground with fill dirt and sand for a 15' x 20' patio.

2.  Lay bricks.

3.  Fill and set bricks with sand.

4.  Fill perimeter of patio with topsoil and plants.

5.  Install grill.

6.  Construct shade structure.

7.  Build benches.

why we're doing it

Southside Williamsburg has very few open green spaces and an abundance of trash on the streets.  Our mission then is to promote, create, and maintain sustainable green space in Southside Williamsburg, and to encourage community involvement and empowerment in neighborhood improvement efforts through gardening, educational workshops, and recreational events. With a new patio, we will be able to continue our efforts of beautifying our block and introducing our neighbors to the joy of gardening. The community has already expressed its gratitude for our efforts and now we want to make the garden even more inviting so that neighbors don't just enjoy it from the outside but come inside to explore and enjoy it. Through this project we hope to increase our neighbors' involvement in this garden and to encourage them to take a greater part in the effort.
