Snowsuits for Estudiantes

La Escuelita Arcoiris wants to provide snowgear to all of our preschool students for outdoor play all year round!

Leader

Alana DeGregory

Location

5915 Beacon Street Pittsburgh, PA 15217

About the project

We are outside everyday. Whether playing in our outdoor classroom or walking through local City Parks, our preschool students spend a portion of their day outdoors. La Escuelita Arcoiris is Pittsburgh's only Spanish immersion preschool.  Aside from language immersion, a key component of our curriculum is outdoor play and exploration. Whether rain, snow, or shine, playing outdoors allows children to learn about nature and fosters a connection to their environment and their community in a variety of sensory and hands-on methods. On a daily basis, we walk to nearby parks, learn in our outdoor classroom, and explore the neighborhood, where our students can jump, run, create, and investigate. Beyond motor skills, children are able to express themselves freely and interact socially. Additionally, studies show this is imperative for children’s health, immune systems, and positive mood. Not to mention, it helps develop critical thinking, creativity and imagination.

With the addition of extra snowsuits, gloves, boots, and hats, our students will be able to spend their time outside in the colder weather more comfortably. The new snowgear will be used for students who either have forgotten the proper clothes, or need an extra layer of warmth; thereby also alleviating the hassle of busy families who may not anticipate the changing weather on a daily basis.

The Steps

When the campaign is finished, we will purchase 63 snowsuits for our students, ages 18 months to 5 years old. Any additional funds will be allocated for hats, gloves, and boots, also to be used by Escuelita students. Once we have acquired our snowgear, we will apply our Escuelita del Bosque (Escuelita in the Forest) brand stencil on our new gear and hit the trails!

*Gently used snow gear will be accepted on site, along with a minimum $5 donation

Why we‘re doing it

The addition of snow gear for La Escuelita students will ensure that our staff can implement our curriculum and philosophies on a daily basis, regardless of outdoor conditions.  Each and every day, Escuelita preschoolers spend time outdoors, either in our jardin de colores or exploring the neighborhood- where they learn, create, and investigate. We believe outdoor exploration is imperative for early childhood development.

“Through outdoor play, children have the freedom to blossom, flourish, and take risks in a supportive environment. We are committed to offering learning opportunities that are both challenging and exciting for our students.” -Megan Rooney, Founder and Director of Education
