Returning To The Source!

Leader

Danielle Hooper

Location

8905 Clarion St Detroit, MI 48213

About the project

Sipapu (See • Pah • Poo): Place of emergence to the 4th world (located in the 4 Corners Region). Comes from “sipa”/”sipo” meaning “point”, “navel”, “portal” AND “papu” meaning “clay”/”earth”.

Quapo (Kwa • Pō): to return, go back; circle; to reconstruct.

Sipapu Quapo Medicine Lodge is a grassroots ministry and  educational institute that operates in conjunction with Oka Ohoyo LLC. Our mission is to educate the descendants of the great Anisazi ("Ancient Ones") bloodline who have been called to carry the torch of the sacred fires that spark life into our inner "shi" (energy). We chose the name “Sipapu Quapo” which comes from our mother tongue signifying our people to return to the source, the old ways of life, our true nature. The name gives honor to Sipapu which our elders have taught us was the original place of our emergence located in the Four Corners Regions, which again is the source. In this “Ritual of Return”, we will hold space for ritual + ceremony and healing for Anisazi peoples.

To carry out our mission, we will facilitate educational programs, passing down traditional skills and wisdom rooted in Anisazi culture such as medicine-making + foraging, self-defense/martial arts, traditional home construction + home-improvement, culinary arts, domestic arts, language arts, ritual work/art of ceremony (including the ceremonies of birth and death), and more! SQML will operate on our 7,000 sqft homestead on Detroit’s east side. We plan on developing the land complete with a medicinal permaculture garden, an outdoor classroom (using a high tunnel greenhouse), work/processing shed, and a stone medicine wheel with a fire pit! We are in the process of acquiring more land in the area and also looking to expand out of state (in Arizona) in the future!

The Steps

Step 1: Clean the land of litter, dead trees, and junk

Step 2: Privacy fence the entire homestead

Step 3: Clear space and set up high tunnel greenhouse in preferred area.

Step 4: Convert garage into work/processing space

Step 5: Hire permaculture/native plant expert to assist in planning a permaculture food forest on the land.

Step 6: Lay down rows of faux grass rugs to serve as the floor of the greenhouse

Step 7: Set up chalkboard and projector w/ screen in the greenhouse

Step 8: Add meditation cushions and tree stumps for seating in greenhouse. Also add decor and altar.

Why we‘re doing it

We are making these efforts to preserve the Anisazi culture and pass down our tradition skills and wisdom to descendants of the Anisazi bloodline.
