the project

I have been in my neighborhood for over 10 years.  In 2018, I bought an empty lot in South Memphis. I became associated with Memphis Tilth which taught me how to make a community garden. After seeing the community gardens that were springing up around town, I saw a need and an opportunity to establish a garden and improve my community.

the steps

  1.  Even out the land.
  2.  Purchase a container for storage.
  3.  Get soil, compost, plants, and seeds,
  4.  Buy 5 raised beds.
  5.  Conduct training and get participation from the whole community.
  6.  Plant for our first season of crops.
  7.  Give the harvest to the neighbors for free.

why we're doing it

Our neighborhood is a food desert.  The nearest grocery store is 2 miles away.  But there are over 11 corner stores and 20 gas stations which serve unhealthy foods.  This causes obesity, malnutrition, and life-long health issues. The community does not have access to fruits, vegetables or fresh flowers.  Additionally, the neighborhood suffers from blight and needs to be beautified.
