the project
I have had a home-based church that has been in this neighborhood for over 30 years. In 2018, we bought land and became associated with Memphis Tilth. After seeing the community gardens that were springing up around town, we saw that there was a need and an opprtunity to establish a garden and improve our community.
the steps
- Erect the fencing and tool shed.
- Hire a gardener to install the raised beds.
- Hold trainings on working the garden.
- Plant for our first season of crops.
why we're doing it
Our neighborhood is a food desert. The nearest grocery store is 2 miles away. But there are over 11 corner stores and 20 gas stations that serve alcohol and unhealthy foods within that 2 mile radius. The community does not have access to fruits and vegetables. Additionally, the neighborhood suffers from blight and needs to be beautified.
