Celebrate Autism Acceptance Month With Us!

Help local caregivers pay for the respite they need due to Covid related reductions in support.

Did you know that there are 21,000 children diagnosed with Autism in Cuyahoga County? In Shaker, some families are caring for children and young adults that need 24/7 supervision. Getting a trained caregiver can cost anywhere from $30 - $80, an hour! 

Help us give these Shaker families 2-4 hours of the "3 Rs" "Rest, Renewal and Respite.” We will be selling items and taking donations for the entire month of April. Proceeds will go directly to families identified by Shaker Heights Pupil Services and the Shaker Parent Mentor, Trina Jones (jones_t@shaker.org ). We will partner with the Shaker Heights School District to identify families with the greatest needs.

We will present the identified families with the funds with a card explaining its use for respite.

why we're doing it

Families that need respite often cannot participate in community activities or socialize with neighbors. Covid has made this even more difficult. We want families caring for a family member with disabilities to be able to participate in local events and meetings as well as get the rest and renewal they need to be able to support their child under Covid schooling circumstances.

Original Budget:

When you have a child with special needs, respite is expensive.

Families pay upwards of $80 for this critical support so that they can have some time to recharge.

Respite $30/hr - up to 4 hours per family

$120 each for up to 40 families. The public school district has at least 50 children assigned to self-contained classrooms because of the intensity of their needs. Even more are placed in other schools because the district cannot meet their needs.
