About the project
Sew Much Love(SML) is a sheltered Based creative employment program for homeless women living in shelters in North Memphis. Women will design, create, mass produce, market, and sell handmade items. Local and national artists will assist the women in developing their creative talents.
The Steps
March and April - Artists and agencies will be contacted about the program. An inventory of present materials will be done
May - Purchases of all materials, interviews and visits with prospective participants and an introductory program for the women to expose them to creative thinking and design. Workshop space prepared.
June - Program begins and will run twice a month from June to December. There will be exhibits and auctions in October and November.
Why we‘re doing it
Over 400 Memphis women are homeless on any given night. Many are physically and emotionally abused, but most are financially unstable. Many have barriers to traditional employment opportunities. SML will provide participants with the skills to use their creative talents to earn a living making handmade creations.
