Send the 2014 JUMP OFF Champions and the JUMP CLUB Coach to SUMMER CAMP!

JUMP CLUB is an athletic club and mentoring program established as one of many clubs within the Peer Power Foundation at East High School.  JUMP CLUB wants to extend its reach into the Memphis community this summer to impact the lives of Memphis youth.  You can help us make a difference by sending us to summer camp with the jump rope experts at the USA Jump Rope Organization.  Camp is July 12th-16th at Western Kentucky University.

the steps

After returning from USA Jump Rope Camp, JUMP CLUB will participate in community events, summer camps, and youth programs around Memphis before school starts back and another year of JUMP CLUB at East High School begins.  JUMP CLUB would like to grow its presence in Shelby County Schools in the coming school year and continue to grow in the Memphis community.

why we're doing it

“Because I love Memphis!” –Coach Laurel

JUMP CLUB was founded by Franklin, TN native Laurel Markovich to combat some of the issues facing not only Memphis youth, but also youth around the world in today’s society.   It is imperative to teach, mentor, support, and push youth to achieve their dreams now more than ever.  Today’s youth face mental and physical health issues, drug and alcohol abuse, violence, identity and self-image issues, lack of discipline, materialism and the list goes on.  With such a great need for change around the world, Laurel is on a mission to restore the health and wellbeing of youth, starting in Memphis, Tennessee.

JUMP CLUB is posting fun facts about jumping rope from the American Heart Association. Below are some fun and interesting facts that will make you want to join the JUMP CLUB! Thank you for supporting Memphis youth by donating and heart health!

  • Jump rope activity can be traced back to 1600 A.D. when the Egyptians used vines for jumping.
  • Many people associate jump roping with girls' play, but history indicates that jump roping was originally a man's game.
  • Jumping rope is a plyometric style workout. Thus it is excellent for developing, power, speed and endurance. Famous advocates of jump rope include Muhammad Ali, Bruce Lee and countless martial artists, boxers and NBA stars.
  • Jump Rope is a competitive sport in over 38 countries and jump roping organizations and clubs can be found almost anywhere.
  • At the competitive level athletes compete in individual and team events using single ropes or double-Dutch. In freestyle routines, jumpers have a set time limit to demonstrate a combination of skills; during the speed events, athletes try to complete as many jumps as possible within a particular amount of time.
  • The world record for 30 seconds speed jumping is 188 jumps!

Every Tuesday until summer camp JUMP CLUB will post testimonies on social media to raise awareness of the impact of working with youth through athletics and mentoring and bring attention to the fundraising campaign.  Check out the #TestimonyTuesday posts from JUMP CLUB members below and follow @theJUMPCLUB on Twitter!

“JUMP CLUB has been my outlet.  I was having trouble with my weight and I was trying so hard to get it down.  One day Coach Laurel came to Peer Power and said ‘I’m getting together a JUMP CLUB!’ From then on my life was changed.  I showed up to every practice.  I worked hard and Coach never let me give up.  Without JUMP CLUB and Coach I would still be an XXXL and not living a healthy life.  Now I’m an XL going on Large!” -Joseph Perry (Reigning Double Dutch and Single Rope Freestyle Champion)

When asked what MEMBERS like best about JUMP CLUB….

“I like practice better than the JUMP OFF because we get to learn new things.  If you want something in life you have to get up and go get it because nobody will give it to you.” -Marlena Oliver

“I love when we have competitions with each other.  It’s not about if I win or lose, it’s about the bond we have with each other.” -Kaila Price (Reigning Individual Rope Freestyle Champion)
