Seedlings for Kincaid Street Garden

Funds for seedlings and perennials

About the project

As a community garden we strive to make gardening accessible and rewarding for anyone who wants to participate. This year we are raising funds to purchase seedlings and perennial plants for the growing season. With healthy vegetable seedlings to get the growing season started, we can rely on the garden for fresh food to eat throughout the spring, summer, and fall. We also hope to plant more perennial plants this spring like asparagus and blueberries so that we can produce food year after year from the same plants.

The Steps

We'll work to raise funds in a number of ways over the next few weeks:

  • We will publish an article about Kincaid Street Garden in The Bulletin, our neighborhood's local newspaper.
  • Gardeners will reach out to potential donors directly.
  • We will have a plant sale on Friday, April 7th during Penn Avenue Unblurred on the corner of Penn and Pacific.

The gardeners and volunteer groups will also work to get the garden ready for growing throughout April. Once we've raised the funds we need, we'll purchase seedlings and perennials and start gardening in May!

Why we‘re doing it

By providing seedlings for gardeners, we remove the barriers to entry for growing food in the community garden. Each year, over 25 families or individuals are able to participate in the garden. However, it can be difficult for gardeners to transport seedlings from the store to the garden without a personal vehicle, and the upfront cost of seedlings can be prohibitive. By having free seedlings available at the garden, it makes starting out easy!

As a community garden with no annual budget, we struggle to fund long-term investments in the space. This year, however, by raising funds to purchase perennial plants, we will be able to grow plants like asparagus and blueberries that will be survive year after year without the annual cost.

$0.33 still needed of $515.00
