About the project
As a thirteen group Chamber of Commerce/Leadership Pendleton collaboration, we aim to replace nine trees lining a city owned parking lot on SE 1st St. that died during winter of 2015-16. We have received a matching grant, so every dollar you donate is automatically doubled!
The Steps
We have worked with the Parks and Recreation department of the City of Pendleton to identify trees that are ideally suited for the parking lot on SE 1st St. These species are: Serviceberry, Redbuds, and Spring Snow Crabs. These trees were selected as they are non-fruit bearing, have shallow root systems, and do not grow to an excessive height.
With trees identintified, once funding is secured we will be able to purchase the trees. Irrigation will be set up and holes will be dug prior to planting of trees. The Parks and Recreation department will transport the trees to the site, and the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Pendleton Class of 2017 will plant the trees.
Why we‘re doing it
Responsible tree planting is a sustainable step cities can take to create healthy communities, walkable towns, and some shade. By planting trees with staggered blooming seasons in an otherwise cemented intersection in town, we will be taking a step to beautify our community.
