About the project
Q: How did the pedestrian cross the road at Poplar Avenue and Tucker Street?
A: Not safely!
We need you to help us change this! Overton Park Conservancy will install new, high-visibility crosswalks at the Poplar-Tucker intersection. Everyone using the park's primary entrance will benefit: park visitors, transit users, MCA students, museum visitors, concert goers and Zoo patrons. Currently, visitors must cross the heavily trafficked, seven-lane Poplar Avenue on poorly marked crosswalks. We want to give visitors a better and safer experience as they come to historic Overton Park and its many wonderful attractions.
By improving the safety of these four crosswalks, we hope to encourage more people to walk or bike into Overton Park. Transit riders will benefit from safer routes to the transit stop and into the park. Help us encourage more Memphians to use transit, walk and bike to our City's great park!
The Steps
Working with the City of Memphis, Division of Traffic Engineering, we will install high-visibility crosswalks at all four street crossings at Poplar Avenue and Tucker Street.
Why we‘re doing it
Safe access to Overton Park and its institutions is important for all visitors. The current conditions of the intersection and entrance are not safe for pedestrians, cyclists or transit riders using the MATA #50 transit stop. These upgrades will create safe crossing for all visitors, students and transit users. This is one of many planned projects to improve pedestrian and bicycle access in and around Overton Park.
