The Rock of Birmingham Community Garden

I picture the garden as a place for families to come and spend time together. I want those who are unemployed or homeless, to have another place to receive food. A place for schools/churches to come and bond as gardeners.

About the project

My project is a community garden in Birmingham, Alabama. It will be a non-profit organization, accepting donations from the community and/or other supporters. I plan for it to teach gardening skills, supply food resources, a space for leisure, and more importantly promote proper nutrition. I see this garden to promoting health, community, sufficiency, and resources. I personally feel my neighborhood support businesses that are not advocates of proper nutrition. By them taking part in growing their own food, they will appreciate nutrition and their health more. Also, I want to add an example of a black owned facility to my community. To show the the older and younger generation, that all it takes is an idea, and a plan can be executed. Especially, if you have the support of a strong community. I hope this garden will help bring people together to get other ideas in motion.

The Steps

Send out a forum for the neighbors of my community to gain at least 50% support of my community.

FInd a sponor. (Through a grant, city amenitie funding, donations, or fundraising)

Finalize a location. (Leasing, insurance)

Design site.

Organize the foundation of the project. (Rules, commitees, legal matters)

Purchase tools, equiptment, etc.

Why we‘re doing it

My community lacks black owned businesses. I'm not in a position to start up my own business right now because of school, but I feel a community garden would be the next best alternative. Food and water are the number one neccessity, and I want to promote good health. Also, I want my neighborhood to have a beautiful place where people can come together and work with each other for a common good. Furthermore, providing a facility for those less fortunate to have a place for food resources.
