This project's leader is looking for volunteers to help out:

We welcome those who identify as Asian, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander to volunteer as a walker in the 1 ½ hour procession in downtown Sacramento on March 25th. Preference will be given to those who represent the AAPI community and residents of Sacramento and neighboring counties. Each volunteer will be given a Right On!  t-shirt that will be worn on the day of the event. 125 walkers will be divided into five groups of 25 walkers led by a coordinator and followed by traditional Asian percussionists. Each group will begin on a different street and slowly walk from Chinatown through Capital Mall. The pace will be set at ⅓ the speed of a normal stride and the walkers with the exception of the musicians will remain in silence. [See below for additional details]

Q&A

 

• When does it start?

  • The walk will begin at 11 am. The volunteer walkers will congregate in downtown Sacramento near the Capital Mall (exact location TBA) on March 25th. Volunteers should arrive 30 minutes before the walk begins for directions and to pick up shirt. 

• When does it end?

  • The walk is approximately 1 ½ hours and then there will be a short musical culmination for 15 minutes. Please reserve 2 1/2 hours for the event. 

• Who can participate in the Sacramento procession?

  • You need not be part of an organization to participate

  • Ages 14- seniors

  • People who identify fully or partially with Asian, Asian American, Pacific Islander. People who do not identify as AAPI may volunteer for other roles besides the walk. See registration form for other volunteer opportunities.

• Can I do the walk part-way?

  • No, unless you are put in the group with mobility issues. That group will walk for 30 minutes, pause for 30 minutes and walk another 30 minutes. Some will only walk 30 minutes, but we need to know how many prior so that there is a large enough presence (20 people in line) 

• What if I have mobility of physical limitations or special needs?

  • For mobility issues, there will be a group specifically for mobility issues whereby the group walk at a normal pace for 30 minutes, pause for 30 minutes, and finish the remaining 30 minutes. 

  • For hard of seeing and those with dog aids, please contact us directly to arrange your accommodations in which group you will be placed. 

  • For hard of hearing, we ask that you have an aide with you or contact us to arrange one. There will be ASL interpreters during the culminating event.

• Do you need any other kinds of volunteers besides walkers?

  • Due to the limited amount of space for the procession, we are accepting volunteers who identify as Asian, Asian American, or Pacific Islander as the walkers and musicians. If you do not identify yourself as AAPI or Asian, we are happy to accept volunteers of all identities for the roles: security aide, mobility aide, sign language translator, photography, videography, social media marketing, editors, setup/breakdown, and transportation.

• When is the last day of registration to be a walker?

  • February 28th is the last day of registration.

• Can I bring friends/family?

  • Yes, but they must register and sign up. 

• Will there be security?

  • Yes, as per city regulations, city police officers and safety monitors will be present.

• Is this a political protest?

  • No. We do not consider this a political protest, but a social justice art event.

• What should I wear?

  • Black pants and sneakers. Since the weather is unpredictable at the end of March, you may need a hat, scarf, and turtleneck underneath your t-shirt. All colors of any clothes, shoes, and accessories should be black, if not black then browns/tans. We need the Right On! T-shirts to show so we can’t wear jackets. 

• What if it rains?

  • There will be a rain date the following weekend April 1. It will be announced by March 21st. 

• What do I need to bring?

  • Do not bring any bags or backpacks. You may wear a fanny pack or small pocket purse but nothing that would be bulky or heavy.

• How much does it cost?

  • There is no entrance fee or cost to attend/volunteer for the event. We do ask that the volunteer walkers send the IOBY crowdfunding link to their network with the goal of raising $100 each, but it is requested and not mandatory. Each volunteer will receive a Right On! T-shirts which they can keep after the event.

• Do I get to keep the t-shirt?

  • Yes.

• Will there be food and drink?

  • No. There will be no food or beverages, so people should eat/drink before and after the walk.

• Will there be bathroom facilities?

  • No. People should do their bio breaks and nearby vicinities before and after the walk
