the project

The year was 2015, and I'd just rushed a cat that was hit by a car outside of my apartment to PVSEC. Little did I know that this would lead to connections and my long journey into the world of rescuing. Fast forward to 2019, when a beautifully colored buff orange cat started frequently coming around my house. He came to be known as Johnny, and it occurred to me that he would soon have his queen and their kittens in tow on their daily visits if I didn't do something. Being proactive to avoid a much bigger problem, I reached out to my past rescue connection at PVSEC to see if she had any tips....she pointed me in the direction to TNVR.

Although TNVR was something that I had never heard of, I became fascinated immediately. From there, I was connected to a pivotal and strong member in the rescue community who graciously brought a trap to my house and showed me what to do. Johnny (as you can see below) became my first successful TNR mission, and the rest is history, with Johnny becoming a daily regular at our feeding station.

One day, about a year and a half later, he came by his trusted feeding station with a broken tail that unfortunately then revealed a dislocated hip. With two surgeries behind him - one that ultimately took his tail - I decided that with the extended cage rest ahead of him, I would try my hardest to socialize him. This story took place during the pandemic summer of 2020, and I am elated to be writing this with Johnny sleeping right next to me, loving his indoor life. Johnny is my reason that I am on a mission to be an advocate for every cat that crosses my path, leaving no cat behind.

I am pleased to announce that to date, as I write this heading into 2022, I have TNR'd 64 (...and counting) cats.

The Rescue Cat Refuge is not a rescue, but pledges to provide a safe space of recovery for TNR where it is otherwise unavailable. We will hold lost animals until we can reunite with their owner.

If you choose to support us in any way, please know that we are eternally grateful. Besides support, other ways you can participate in our mission is ensuring that your pets are spayed/neutered, providing winter shelters, and carrying out TNR efforts with community cats. You can find local information for Pittsburgh vets and clinics on our resources tab.

the steps

We plan to trap in our community and surrounding areas, and participate in any spay/neuter clinic we're able to, whether this is through a mobile clinic or onsite at an event, we'll be there.  Dates have not yet been posted.   We pledge to find owners if we encounter a lost cat with a microchip, and handle the situation otherwise, through a foster to adopt program.    We will support other rescues and community members with our trapping skills, and volunteer efforts.

Most importantly we devote ourselves to carrying out our mission:  helping anytime we are able to.

why we're doing it

We aim to help slow down the reproduction of community and feral cats, which starts with the sterilization of the felines.  We encounter sick and injured cats, and tend to the medical needs, to help them have as best of a quality of life as they can.  When we rescue a cat showing a friendly demeanor, we'll begin to socialize with hopes of adopting them out later.

We care a lot about those that are helpless and aim to make an impact through our efforts.
