About the project

ReHecho or The ReMade Project is a community event based on supporting artists that work with recycled materials, repurposing textiles and different objects. It has an educational and social approach to environmentalism while supporting artists by having a market space. It is composed of: market, music, film cycles, talks, performances and workshops; all in the form of a fair. ReHecho not only is determined to support these artists already working with reused material but is rather impulsed by the idea of making this concept the natural way of designing and re-making new products, inspiring also other artists and the audience that visits. Moved by a pertinent context of today's environmental issues, it is about creating consciousness about lowering our impact by making less waste in our everyday life. Also, this project encourages the philosophy of trueque, trying to find alternative ways of economy and exchange. Finally, what makes ReHecho special is the ambience created around it, it is a social gathering rather than just a market, that dreams of being the soil where new relations will grow between the participants.

In addition to this event, the idea is to create a short film with the community and for the community. This film will celebrate The Lower East Side / Loisaida community and the motivation of recycling, cleaning your neighborhood and sustainables alternatives of living. Not only will it inspire but it will portray this consciousness through beautiful imagery, culminating with this beautiful gathering. The product (film) will try to get into Film Festivals and would be shown for free at Clemente Soto Velez in a TBD date by the end of 2021.

With your support, ReHecho will be able to make this event happen free for the community (no entrance fee). Also it will support all the educators, artists, performers and volunteers with fair stipends, food and drinks as a way of being grateful for their work and presence. Finally, it will make possible the community short film by financing cinematic equipment, stipends, productions costs and permits.

The Steps

This August, we will start with pre-production: checking locations, rehearsals, closing deals with spaces, creation of costumes open workshop. We will also be closing deals with artists and participants and planning the overview of the schedule. Then in September from the 18th-19th we will be presenting the street fair, then the shoot we will have September 22- 24th.

Why we‘re doing it

ReHecho / The ReMade Project is an inclusive and bilingual project. It is inspire by beautiful characters that are part of the community of the Lower East Side and their authentic vision of upcycling and environmental consciousness. Through art expression, different languages, people from all sectors, we want to create a celebration both of trash made into art and the Lower East Side as a social heart of creativity and uniqueness.
