About the project
Refuge for Nations is a nonprofit social enterprise and subsidiary of International Friendship Centers. We create employment opportunities for refugee women through dedicated sewing centers across metro Detroit. We feel it is our moral and ethical responsibility as a nation to meet the material, emotional and spiritual needs of the immigrant and refugee communities while giving back to the greater community by feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, providing support to the hurting and much more.
The Steps
To find and connect with the refugee and immigrant communities, where ever they are--to conduct sewing classes for them by our dedicated volunteers and through Wayne community college--after they master the skill we employ them at Refuge Production at Durfee in Detroit--we connect and build relationships with local businesses, individuals and companies to get sewing jobs so women could be employed, earn some fair income, support their families and contribute to the economic growth of the society. We want to make it a self sustainable project--
Why we‘re doing it
So the women could start working immediately who have gone through training and now ready to work -Refuge for Nations is actively fundraising for our new Detroit location! All donations will help buy 10 industrial sewing machines, electric cutters, sewing accessories and all costs associated with making the space functional for our women workers!
