Readers Become Leaders

Put a book in a child's hand and help PASS ON the rich history and culture of African Americans

Leader

Beverly Lloyd

Location

2705 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive Cleveland, OH 44120

About the project

We founded Pass It On MAAT, in June of 2017 to promote literacy and positive self-images among individuals by "passing on" stories of African American history and culture through a multi-dimensional experience. We have partnered with Cleveland libraries, the Kids Book Bank of Cleveland, and The Boys and Girls Clubs all over Cleveland and put over 400 books in the hands of children all over Northeastern Ohio! Thanks to a generous donation from  Arthur Walker,  we've been able to gift several groups of children with books every month since last year.  But our reserves are running out! Help us put books in children's hands and pass on the rich history and culture of African Americans. Together, we're breaking stereotypes, building academic success, and developing self esteem in our future leaders!

The Steps

Identify any new titles to add to the Pass It On Maat book list

Establish discounts with new sellers/authors

Establish new partnerships with libraries and schools

Select age groups for book giveaways

Why we‘re doing it

Many urban children do not have a personal library, nor do they visit the library with a family member. As a result, they are deprived of the joy and privileges that come with reading. Our goal is to promote the love of reading while "Passing On" the rich culture and history absent in many classrooms. Using Literacy Circles as a multi-dimensional learning experience to encourage and motivate children of all backgrounds to love reading is how we "pass it on"!   The Founder, Beverly Lloyd, served as English Language Arts Chairperson, Master Teacher, Advance Placement Teacher and Multicultural Resource Teacher for the Cleveland Municipal School District for 38 years. As a veteran member of the Cleveland Association of Black Storytellers, she believes that "Readers Become Leaders"! We hope you'll donate and/or volunteer to help keep our program going.
