the project

The garden at the Andrews Middle School was created to help teach the students about the environment, growing food and science. During the pandemic it fell into disrepair. The Medford Community Garden Commission and The Friends of Medford Community Gardens has received permission to re-vamp the garden and make it better for our community! This garden is a shade garden for most of the summer because of its proximity to the building.

Six garden beds will be for Medford Community Gardeners and project started by middle school students called Nature in Our Midst. The goal of Nature in Our Midst is to make people more aware, connected, and involved with the natural world within the city. The projects they do are all in the City of Medford, but similar projects and ideas apply to other cities as well. Nature in Our Midst aims to bring people closer to nature and help them notice the vast wildlife in their city. They do this by providing information, activities, personal projects, and ideas that they have created, gathered, and compiled.

the steps

We have already received a viable quote from Hedgewitch Horticulture that includes garden design and rebuiding and filling with good quality soil. The student led project, Nature in our Midst, will be the caretakers of at least one garden bed to help grow more native flowers for our community. Once the funds are raised, Hedgewitch Horticulture will be able to implement their design.

Thanks to generous support from The Medford Community Chorale, this project is being matched up to $760. Give today and your donation can be doubled!

why we're doing it

This will provide much needed additional garden space for community gardeners in Medford. The wait list for the existing community gardens are very long!

We are a group of residents working with the City of Medford and others to enhance the quality of urban life and build community bonds by creating and sustaining a gardening network that promotes the benefits of “green” and sustainable gardening practices. We invite Medford residents to join us, particularly those without gardening space and who want to be part of a community garden.
