About the project

East Harlem is a food desert. The children enrolled in CS Explorers, our year-round, youth-centered, health-based workshops, do not have much access to fresh, affordable, organic vegetables and fruits. Many of their immediate family members suffer from diabetes and related conditions.

The Steps

1. The children will research fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers from their native lands. 2. They will plant and maintain a selection of these items. 3. They will create a presentation about what they've grown and present it to friends and families in conjunction with a meal made from the many foods in our garden, Mad Fun Farm.

Why we‘re doing it

Our participants (ages 7-8) would like to grow a Rainbow Garden at Mad Fun Farm. They will research fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers native to their respective places of origin and then grow these representative plants to share with the community. We have children from a variety of places like Santo Domingo, Dakar (Senegal), New York City, and Mexico City. Once the food is grown, we will learn how to cook traditional dishes from each location with their parents. The children will also have the opportunity to bring their produce home to share with their families.
