About the project
There has been a tremendous amount of teen gun-violence in the Glenville area lately. Case in point, Te'Vion Cunningham a Glenville student-athlete who (though had a promising future) was recently killed trying to purchase a handgun. Guns are too freely available to our children and this situation needs to be addressed. Statistics show that it is sometimes easier for a student to purchase a gun then it is a laptop computer. The "Put The Guns Down" Rally/Event has been created to bring awareness as well as educating the students on the dangers of teen gun violence. We will have students recite poems and do musical/rap performances centered around stopping gun violence in their neighborhood. We will have gang members and teens speaking who have lost their siblings/family members due to gun violence from other teenagers. We will also have pledge cards for students to sign pledging not to pick up a gun this summer.
The Steps
Once we secure the funds we will:
1) Pay for the t-shirts, ink pens, flyers and other promotional materials.
2) Purchase the equipment : used speakers, microphones and control boards to this and future events.
3) Purchase food/caterer.
Why we‘re doing it
We are doing this in hopes of saving teen lives this summer as well as spreading awareness and to open dialogue of this problem and how and what we can do as a community to come up with a solution.
