the project

Since the beginiing of the COVID-19 pandemic, in March of 2020, the organizers of Pittsburgh Restaurant Workers Aid have been rallying to deliver necessary resources to the doors of hospitality workers. Restaurant closures and restrictions, health risks, and the demands of caring for family members are still impacting our community over a year later, and many of us will feel the economic impacts of this crisis for months and years to come. We're still waiting on hold to reach Unemployment to get our earned benifits, still struggling for equitable pay, sick leave, health care access, and economic stability that is all to rare for so many workers in this industry. Help PRWA support our Distribution Center project, as our Board and volunteer network continue to deliver over 100 Care Packages of groceries, baby items, pet food, and hosehold necessities to households in need.

the steps

These funds will support our Distribution Center, allowing us to rent and maintain a safe, clean, and accessible space to recieve and process food donations and send out resources with our network of volunteer drivers. Hundreds of restaurant workers and their households rely on us to bridge the gap as other resources, such as government programs and food banks, are insufficient or inaccessable. In an industry plagued with low wages and weak worker protections, many workers were struggling even before our world was thrown into crisis. The resources and advocacy provided by PRWA are critical to the survival of far too many people, and will be needed for years to come, until we can make our industry safe, equitable, and supportive of all who work to keep our bars, restaurants, and cafés running.

why we're doing it

Our project strives to make sure that all restauraut workers can maintain food security, housing stability, and access to the heathcare they need, even during this global pandemic. With our network of volunteer drivers, and the work of our Board, Distribution Center organizer, and Advocacy orgnaizer, we deliver food and supplies directly to workers in need, many of whom can not leave their homes due to health concerns, family care obligations, or lack of access to safe and reliable transportation. We love our industry, and are passionate about creating great dining and drinking experiences for our guests, and belive that the workers who create these experiences deserve dignity, respect, pay equity, and safe work environments as we bare the economic brunt of necessary restictions and return to work at great risk to our own health.
