About the project

We will be building a new 16' footbridge on the hiking/biking trail in Powhite Park.  This new bridge will address current safety and environmental issues.  There currently is a crude bridge along this section of trail that is very much in disrepair.  It is also located in a low-lying, ecologically sensitive area.  The new bridge we will be constructing will address both issues.  By moving furthur upstream we be avoiding a low-lying, flood-prone area.  We will also be greatly improving the condition of the bridge, making it much safer for trail users.  All work will be done by volunteers.  We will work in conjunction with Park Staff to insure the new bridge meets approved safety standards and construction techniques.

The Steps

First we will aquire the needed materials and transport them to the worksite.  We will then build and install a new 16' footbridge along the trail at Powhite Park.  All work will be done in conjunction with Park staff and will be done to Park-approved standards.  Upon completion we will stain the bridge.  We will also be disassembling an old crude bridge that is in the area and transporting it out of the Park.  Finally, we will realign the trail to the new bridge in an approved and ecologically sensitive manner.

Why we‘re doing it

This project addresses both safety and environmental issues.  It will allow us to relocate the trail out of an ecologically sensitive area.  At the same time, we will be replacing a very unsafe bridge that is currently in the area.  Both of these will lead to a much better trail experience for all users of this popular neighborhood trail.
