The Power of One Dedicated Woman

Honoring unsung women changing Detroit neighborhoods

Leader

Amber Umscheid

Location

615 Griswold, Suite 805 Detroit, MI 48226

About the project

The Power of One Dedicated Woman honors unsung women changing Detroit neighborhoods. Since 2015, Michigan Community Resources has partnered with event visionary Dotti Sharp and countless sponsors and individual donors to carry out this important recognition.

In 2020, the sixth annual awards will celebrate the contributions of six women who lead with passion, inspire others, give of their time, and do so often without recognition or external support.

This year we will be honoring and supporting the following six women:

  • Jasmine Mahone, Brilliant Detroit
  • Joyce Moore, Virginia Park Community Coalition
  • Yvonne Gibbs, Forrer Community Block Club
  • Theresa Landrum, 48217 advocate
  • Claudia Enriquez, Southwest Detroit supporter
  • Sandra White, Hope Village Revitalization

We also honor the legacy of Samoy Smith and the impactful work she spearheaded in the Bagley Community.

Michigan attorneys:
Michigan Community Resources participates in the Access to Justice (ATJ) Campaign and encourages the support of Michigan attorneys through the ATJ Fund. For more information and to donate, please visit https://atjfund.org/.

This will be a celebratory occasion in place of our annual in-person event. You can tune in to the live virtual event on Tuesday, September 22nd at 9:00 a.m. on Michigan Community Resources' Facebook page!

October 2020 and beyond - Continued support of all honorees and the organizations they work with, including bringing all 36 honorees together from the last six years of Power of One awards to support one another as they continue impacting their communities, and as they pass their batons to the next generation of community leaders.

Why we‘re doing it

These women deserve recognition precisely because they did not ask for it. Though not often in the limelight, they are the ones who inspire. It’s time to honor the women who have created a stir, inspired change, and given us a reason to hope for a better future.

Check out our YouTube page to learn more about all 36 honorees!
